Nearby Turkey Mountain has over 15 miles of dirt trails that are the absolute best for horseback riding or mountain biking. If you just want to go hiking, they are great for this too. When the season is right there are many other outdoor activities, such as fishing, disc golf, kayaking, rowing and the outdoor café where you can stop and take a breather from all the activities.
There are many featured events in River Parks as well. All throughout the year there are competitions for cycling and running and fireworks, festivals and concerts. The park is also the location for private functions. Company parties or retreats are held here yearly. The area is so diverse here ranging from the rugged Urban Wilderness of Turkey Mountain to the lawns that are well taken care of and the banks of the Arkansas River.
The area is popular no matter the season. On any given day you can see children at play, people walking their pets or others who take a lunch to the park and enjoy the scenery. There are numerous birds that can be spotted here including the bald eagle, pelicans, songbirds of many types and herons. The wildlife is abundant as well. You may catch as glimpse of a fox, a family of raccoons or a beaver. The trails are very heavily used by the people of the area and it passes by all types of neighborhoods in Tulsa.
The goal of River Parks is to be the best place for entertainment and recreation in Tulsa. Events are already held here all year long. There are many that do not cost and some that do. The festivals and events that are featured by the River Parks Authority are funded with private sponsorships from Tulsa area organizations and businesses. Volunteers are also a large part of the events.
The Reynolds Floating Stage and Amphitheater is located at River West Festival Park. The location is often where concerts are held and Tulsa fall festivals such as Oktoberfest and the Oklahoma Scottish Festival. The ONEOK Freedom Fest is a tradition that has been held since 1976. The Independence Day festivities include concessions, inflatable for the little ones and live music. The fireworks are an awesome sight as they are fired into the air from the 21st Street Bridge. The fireworks are choreographed and broadcast over a local radio station.
